Courses from the Hadley School

Category: Cram Session

Has anyone ever taken any course from the Hadley School for the Blind? For those of you who've never heard of it, Hadley's a school in Illinois that offers free corespondence courses to blind people and their families. They teach regular academic stuff as well as everything from chess to parenting to birdsong. I'm currently taking a course on Grade Three Braille (yes there is such a thing) which is kind of chalenging but fun.

I started the grade three course, didnt see where it would truly benefit me, although it was fun, so i stopped it. took a few other courses though.
take care,

Is grade 3 braille hard to learn?

Post 4 by lelia (Zone BBS Addict) on Monday, 16-Oct-2006 18:54:11

I've taken the bible study course, and also am now in the foods series.

I haven't taken any courses, but I want to take the chess course. It sounds fun and my friend took it and she loved it.

I've thought about taking the food course. I didn't realize they had a chess course, that would be fun. Does anyone know how it works? Do you have to pay. My rehab counselor told me I could do a food course and they would pay for it, but I don't know about the chess course.

All of Hadley's courses are free. When I was in high school, I took an english class from Hadley, along with the ones I took in school. After I graduated from high school, I continued to take more courses. I've taken Health 1, and I'm currently taking Health 2. I've already had these courses in my regular schooling, but I enjoy the learning. It also gives me something to do in my spare time. I started to take Grade 3 Braille, but I stopped after a while. The idea of it was interesting, but I figured I wouldn't really use it, so I decided to not continue with it. I'm also interested in taking the food courses. I have a question for those of you who have taken, or are currently taking the food courses. How is it? What's it like?

I've taken English Skills I and Spanish even though I speak it already! I wanted to learn how to read it! Without having to ask my best friend Maria! I've taken the French course! I quit that one!

http://www.hadley-school.org/Web_Site/Hadley-School.asp

There's the address. You can look at what courses they offer, on their web site, or they can send you a course catalog. You'll also have to fill out some information, but you can find all that information on the site.

Hi,
I was thinking about taking some of the courses, but I have a few questions. How is the information given to you? I mean is it braille or tape or large print? And do you do the assignments and send them back? I use braille, but I don't have a braille writer.

Post 13 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Sunday, 17-Dec-2006 15:14:58

It depends on the courses. They can be given in Braille, tape, regular or large print, or online; you choose the one that works best for you if there's a choice (which there usually is). Also, yes, you finish each lesson and mail or email it back when you're done, but I think they do give you a certain period of time to do that, like a month or a few months or something. Sometimes, you can keep some of the material they send to you, but again it depends on what courses you take I think. Also, you would have to have your own material to do the work as well. Like if you get a course on tape, you'd need to have your own cassette player/recorder, or if you are required to respond in Braille, you'd need a Brailler or slate and stylus, for typing you'd need access to a typewriter/computer. You might want to look in their website that was given in Post 11 for the exact policies they have on how they do things. *smile* I haven't taken a course from there myself, but I think it'd be fun to do that some time. I wonder what Grade 3 Braille is like. *smile*

Ok thanks.
I saw on the website about the different formats that the courses are offered. But I couldn't find anything about submitting work. But there was a number, so I'll call it. <smile>

I have taken the Chess course through the Hadley school, and am now taking Essentials of Nemeth. You need to communicate with your instructor once a month, and if you have any questions for them, don't hesitate to ask. The Chess course was really fun, and plus, if you finish the whole course, you get to keep the Chess set, which comes with the materials. The URL has been changed. It's now www.hadley.edu. (Oh, and about Grade 3 Brl, not that many people really use it.)

I think Hadley is wonderful. I've had consumers I work with who have taken braille classes through them. Having said that, I'm probably the poster child of what a bad hadley student is. In short, I don't have the self-discipline to study by correspondence. I took part of the braille music course when I was in college, and the intro to computers back in the early 90's. With being able to use e-mail, it might make me a better, more disciplined student, though.

The Braille Music course has been discontinued. I took it and it was very confusing. I wasn't very interested in learning it, and am not going to take it back up in a hurry.

Post 18 by motifated (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Thursday, 22-Mar-2007 21:08:36

I'm sorry to hear that. I was a music major, and primarilly worked by ear. I still do, but I use braille music for my church job. If I don't know a particular hymn, I read the melody with one hand and play with the other, while the organist plays the chords. Also, if I have to write out a part for something, It's a great help.

I wonder if Hadley has a Braille Transcription course. I know they now have a department which will transcribe printed materials.

Post 21 by EssenceOfFaith (The Creamy Apple) on Wednesday, 04-Apr-2007 9:23:45

Braille music is great for people who play, but it's annoying if you sing. There's no real way to site sing, because there's no relationship between the words and the notes. i think it's awful that people who read choral or vocal music should have to do all this process of elimination work that sighted people don't have to do. it's right in front of them; the playing field is not level. It makes me so angry.

Post 26 by Colombian Coke (Veteran Zoner) on Tuesday, 31-Jul-2007 22:37:13

sorry, but what is great 3 braille? I've heard of it, but don't really know what it's for.

Post 27 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Wednesday, 01-Aug-2007 10:47:17

Not too many people use it. I don't know it myself.

Post 28 by Musical Ambition (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Thursday, 02-Aug-2007 9:22:59

Grade 3 Braille is just Braille another step further, with more contractions, and things like that. People who learn it, use it mostly for taking notes etc. It's just a form of Grade 2 shorthand, really.

Post 31 by soaring eagle (flying high again!) on Monday, 08-Oct-2007 15:12:32

for any one that works for an NIB agency, there courses that you can take. The purpose is to get more blind people in management and this is a good way to begin. you can read about the program at www.nib.org and look for the business management training. there will be four courses in time. Hope this helps soneone.

Post 32 by Musical Ambition (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Thursday, 10-Apr-2008 11:52:02

Is there anyone here who has taken, or is currently taking, the Foods courses? I'm interested in taking those, but I'd like to get more information about them. The course description doesn't say too much. If anyone has, or is, taking them, what are they like? What's the layout? What kinds of things do you have to do? Etc.

Post 33 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Tuesday, 15-Apr-2008 9:19:00

I'd like to take those too.

Post 34 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Thursday, 19-Jun-2008 14:12:14

I just submitted my entrance assignment to take the personal psychology course, which sounds interesting. I also saw one on safety/self-defense, but how would you do something like that online? That just seems kind of dumb to me.
